Mill Trail to Bingham Falls, Vermont

A must-see waterfall if you're in Stowe!

Less than 5 miles from the Sterling Pond Trail, which I shared details on last week, is an easy hike to a breathtaking waterfall. If you’re planning to hike Sterling Pond, you’ll pass the trail to Bingham Falls on the way. I’d highly recommend including this gorgeous spot in your adventure!

Located on Notchbrook Road, The Mill Trail leading to Bingham Falls is a quick stop off VT-108 as you head north. This 1.3 mile out-and-back hike follows an old logging road with high views over the West Branch of the Little River. The trail is wide and relatively flat, but there are some sections of roots, so I would not rate this hike as fully accessible. There are also sections traversing close to the edge of the deep gorge, so hold onto those dogs and small children.

The most spectacular reward at the end of this trail is a 40-foot waterfall feeding the abundant cascades, pools, and glacially carved rocks below it. Side trails winding towards the base of the falls provide a closer view and swimming opportunities in the summer months.

For a shorter and much steeper hike to the falls, find the Bingham Falls Trail off VT-108, about a mile north of Notchbrook Road. This 0.5 mile out-and-back will bring you down a steep, stone staircase to the west side of the river and falls.

We loved the bird’s eye view, wooden bridges, and many access points along the Mill Trail, but if you’re short on time, the Bingham Falls Trail is a great alternative.

Protected in 2001 by the Stowe Land Trust and partners, the Mill Trail is now part of Smuggler’s Notch State Park. It’s good to know that beautiful places like this will continue to be cared for and protected for future generations.
