Stone Barn Farm, Bar Harbor

Stone Farm Barn with rolling fields and a gazebo behind it in Bar Harbor, Maine.

I’ve admired this gorgeous barn for twenty years, driving past it countless times during trips to Mount Desert Island. Situated between Crooked Road and rolling hills with wild lupine, this historic farm dates back to the 1840’s. The iconic barn is en route to downtown Bar Harbor from the coveside cabins we rent for our annual family reunion each June. Last year, I noticed trailhead parking near the farm and this year, I got to explore the trail leading from it.

Purchased by the Maine Coast Heritage Trust in 2019, this preserve now includes 2 miles of trails in network. I followed the easy, 1.5-mile Wood Lily Path and Wagon Path Loop, winding through open fields and mixed forest to Northeast Creek.

Aside from two deer I spotted at the start of my walk, the trail was empty of people and filled with a varied mix of interesting and gorgeous topography.

After completing the loop, follow the path leading down to the farmhouse. Take in the view from the gazebo, then explore the barn up close.
