Presumpscot River Preserve, Portland

In case you're wondering, he did make it across.

The last thing you'd expect to find tucked within a bustling city of 70,000 people, is a roaring waterfall, but this is exactly what you'll discover at the Presumpscot River Preserve - and this is why we love (and live in) Portland, Maine. To be accurate, Presumscot Falls is technically a series of rapids and cascades, but I call it a waterfall because it's as breathtaking as those with steep, vertical drops.

About 10 years ago, my neighbor Bill introduced us to Presumpscot Falls on a hot summer day - a first visit that blew me away. I couldn't believe a preserve this gorgeous had been sitting just a few miles from our house all along. In hindsight, that was likely the seed that grew into this newsletter, the desire to share hidden backyard hikes with locals.

Since that first visit, Presumpscot River Preserve has been a regular favorite for our family, one we walk in all seasons. It's kind of funny that after all these years, I'm finally sitting down to write about it.

From the small trailhead parking area on Overset Rd, the path winds along a stream, then down to the river’s edge.

For the route to the waterfall, head right, crossing a foot bridge before reaching a staircase leading down to a small beach and swimming area for your dog. Return to the trail and follow it along the water for another 0.7 miles before reaching the stunning waterfall at the end. 

Dogs love this trail because of it's many water features - streams, cascades, and falls. People love it for the peace, tranquility, and stunning views.

In addition to the easy hike to the falls, there are a total of 2.5 miles to explore here on foot, bike, snowshoe, or cross country ski. Enjoy one, enjoy them all!
