Where to cut your own Christmas tree in Southern Maine.

Over our 20 years in Portland, we’ve purchased Christmas trees from a multitude of places, including pre-cut from nurseries, gas stations, and high schools, along with cut-your-own trees from a friend’s family farm in Bowdoinham.
Last year, we tried a local tree farm and cried laughing while cutting down one of the remaining trees - tiny with a flat top, leaning slightly to the left…and costing a small fortune. I did love this quirky nugget, always appreciating things that are a bit off. Still, I wish we’d known about tagging a tree in mid-November like the rest of the folks there, people who went home with tall trees donning pointed tops that could actually hold a star or something.
Years of searching for a solid Christmas tree tradition led me to pose a question to this community last year, “Where is the best place to cut down a Christmas tree in Southern Maine?” I took your answers and compiled them into this list, which I’ve updated for 2025. Wherever you buy your tree, enjoy the smell of Balsam fir, the warm lights, and the childhood ornaments in the strangest tradition we all love.
